MBP Lock up

Posted by Martin Walch on Oct 19, 2007

Hi Tom and crew. First thanks for a great app, and for all the hard work that goes into looking after it and the NodeBox community !!!

My problem is that my new MacBookPro with nVidia GeForce 8600M GT locks up completely every time I run something that is CoreImage intensive. Coreimage-example4.py (from the Core Image Library) runs for about 20 seconds before my machine locks up and must be re-booted. I suspect this is something to do with the nVidia Drivers not completely working with Core Image. Do you have any experience of crashes like this?
Any ideas for a solution or work around ?

crash report as follows;

No mapping exists for frame pointer
Backtrace terminated-invalid frame pointer 0xbffeef08
Kernel loadable modules in backtrace (with dependencies):
com.apple.GeForce(5.0.6)@0x94f000
dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOPCIFamily(2.2)@0x5f2000

dependency: com.apple.iokit.IONDRVSupport(1.4.7)@0x717000
dependency: com.apple.NVDAResman(5.0.6)@0x726000

thanks

Mart

Hi Martin,

Unfortunately our machines still have the ATI graphics card, so I won't be able to test this until I find a machine with a GeForce installed.

My best guess would be that Mac OS X itself needs some updates. We've experienced some odd things in the past if you used Core Image on the initial OS X 10.4.0 with a newer graphics card - the problem went away once you updated to OS X 10.4.9.

Leopard might bring a solution, or else I'll have to find someone with a GeForce to run some tests.

Does the problem occur when you export from Core Image, or simply when you run Core Image scripts?

Hi Tom,

Unfortunately it happens when I run any Core Image scripts.
I have 10.4.10 running with NodeBox 1.9.1
No other libraries are a problem, and it seems to be
related to the canvas.draw() function.

Will have to wait to see if there is any improvement with Leopard, fingers crossed.

Am using NodeBox as for part of my PhD research in Fine Art, visualising tracks through land with GPS and Camera,
and the MacBookPro is an important part of the process. I hope to have some images and scripts to share in the not too distant future.

Thanks again for all the great work from down here in Tasmania.
